Sometimes the terms "self-publishing" and "vanity publishing" are used interchangeably, which is incorrect. There's a big difference and I don't think there's anything favourable that can be said about the latter. For a detailed break down of the terms of Horizons vanity press, Jackie Kessler has an excellent post on her blog. There are also lively discussions over at Smart Bitches and Dear Author
On a happier note, The Book Depository has a promo going, where over 11,000 e-books are available for free download. Christmas just came early!!!

Fantastic on the ebooks, Christina. And thanks for the links. It is confusing to those of us out here wondering what the heck is going on with HQN.
Wow! 11,000 books. Thanks for the links, Christina!
I'm following the debate with interest!
I'm also paying attention to the debate but am now distracted by all the free books! :)
Free books?
The only thing better than that is free chocolate!!
I'm following the HQN business with interest, too. The next six months will certainly be full of debate.
lol Thanks Christina, more to add to my tbr pile. A great download though. :)
I think it's too soon to make judgement on Harlequin, but I have kept a close eye on the developments. But being told, many publishers break out into extra lines, different diversions. I think this is what Harlequin is doing and I don't think it will make that much of an impact with the already well known Harlequin lines. They will remain the same. As per what I have been told. ")
