Song of the Nile ~ a Cleopatra's Daughter Novel

It's my pleasure to welcome Stephanie Dray today, to help celebrate the release of her latest Cleopatra's Daughter novel, Song of the Nile.

The long-awaited new tale based on the true story of Cleopatra's daughter.

After years of abuse as the emperor’s captive in Rome, Cleopatra Selene has found a safe harbor. No longer the pitiful orphaned daughter of the despised Egyptian Whore, the twenty year old is now the most powerful queen in the empire, ruling over the kingdom of Mauretania—an exotic land of enchanting possibility where she intends to revive her dynasty. With her husband, King Juba II and the magic of Isis that is her birthright, Selene brings prosperity and peace to a kingdom thirsty for both. But when Augustus Caesar jealously demands that Selene’s children be given over to him to be fostered in Rome, she’s drawn back into the web of imperial plots and intrigues that she vowed to leave behind. Determined and resourceful, Selene must shield her loved ones from the emperor’s wrath, all while vying with ruthless rivals like King Herod. Can she find a way to overcome the threat to her marriage, her kingdom, her family, and her faith? Or will she be the last of her line?

Below me, six black Egyptian cobras dance on their tails, swaying. I watch their scaled hoods spread wide like the uraeus on the crown of Egypt. Even from this height, I'm paralyzed by the sight of the asps, their forked tongues flickering out between deadly fangs. I don't notice that I'm gripping the balustrade until my knuckles have gone white, all my effort concentrated upon not swooning and falling to my death.
And I would swoon if I were not so filled with rage. Someone has arranged for this. Someone who knows what haunts me. Someone who wants to send me a message and make this occasion a moment of dread. My husband, the king must know it, for he calls down, "That's enough. We've seen enough of the snake charmer!"
There is commotion below, some upset at having displeased us. Then Chryssa hisses, "Who could think it a good idea to honor the daughter of Cleopatra by coaxing asps from baskets of figs?"
The story the world tells of my mother's suicide is that she cheated the emperor of his conquest by plunging her hand into a basket where a venomous serpent lay in wait. A legend only, some say, for the serpent was never found. But I was there. I brought her that basket. She was the one bitten but the poison lingers in my blood to this day. I can still remember the scent of figs in my nostrils, lush and sweet. The dark god Anubis was embroidered into the woven reeds of the basket, the weight of death heavy in my arms. I can still see my mother reach her hand into that basket, surrendering her life so that her children might go on without her. And I have gone on without her.
I have survived too much to be terrorized by the emperor's agents or whoever else is responsible for this.
If it is a message, a warning from my enemies, I have already allowed them too much of a victory by showing any reaction at all. So I adopt as serene a mask as possible. My daughter blinks her big blue eyes, seeing past my facade. "Are you frightened, Mother? They cannot bite us from there. The snakes are very far away."
I get my legs under me, bitterness on my tongue. "Oh, but they're never far enough away."

Excerpt 3 R rated – Her Dream Cowboy

His palms came upon her knees. She whimpered, realizing he was knelt in front of her. Thighs spread wide, she dropped her bowl to one side, inviting him in, and he took what she offered, moving close until he hooked both hands around her back.
The shock of his mouth against her collarbone galvanized her, making her arch into him. His tongue darted out to lick at her skin and she tingled from head to toe with sensation. Sophie unfurled her tightly clenched fists and speared them through his hair, knocking his hat from his head. Finally opening her eyes, she gazed down at his golden head as he licked his way across one breast to the other.
The sight of golden hair brushing her pale skin made her shudder with need. As if understanding that need, Luke took his hands from her back and thrust them under her shirt, fingertips skimming over her stomach and pressing beneath her bra.
His fingers closed in over her nipples as he watched her reaction carefully. She sighed and clutched his shoulders, hoping it would be enough to keep him there. If he stopped touching her, Sophie was fairly sure she might die of disappointment.
Rolling her nipples into hard buds, he plucked and played with them and palmed her breasts. Never had something as simple as just being touched turned her on so much.
“Sweetheart, you taste so good. I could eat you up.”
“Oh, yes,” she moaned.
Luke shoved her T-shirt up under her arms and pulled down the cups of her bra before settling his mouth over one nipple. The exquisite heat of his tongue made her sex clench. She rolled her head back and stared at the darkening sky.
He laved his tongue over her other nipple and blew gently over it, causing it to tighten further.
“Luke,” she groaned as he teased her some more with mouth and teeth. If he didn’t do something else soon, she swore she would explode. “More, I need more.”
Slowly, he scattered soft gentle kisses across her breasts before pulling up her bra and tugging down her top. Sagging, Sophie brought her head back up to see his regretful expression. His lips tilted as he reached out and ran a finger down her profile.
“I can’t, Soph. I shouldn’t be trying to seduce a client. It’s really unprofessional.”
“You weren’t seducing me,” she protested. “I want you, Luke. I don’t care if it’s just for one night or whatever. Why can’t we enjoy one night together? It’s not like I can report you to the boss!”
“But I am the boss and I’m meant to be running a business. I don’t make a habit of sleeping with tourists, and I’m sure as hell not going to start now. No matter how tempted I am.”

Excerpt 2 (R rated) – The Layover

Locke walked out of his pants and worked the buttons free of his shirt. It slid from his shoulders in the doorway to his bedroom. "I got neighbors, yeah, bu-- damn." He came to a dead stop and devoured the sight of the near naked man before him.
While he wouldn't say Wilder was ripped, he was defined. The lines of his abs curled all the way to the rise of his hips. As a horseman, he had broad, well muscled thighs and through the shed of clothing across the small main room, the man was still wearing his hat.
Locke grinned wickedly, tugging his tie from his neck. He dropped it to the floor and backed into the small bedroom. "Leave the hat on.”
With a tip of his Stetson Wilder crossed the abbreviated foyer. His bravado showed in his stride, a cocky strut of pending glory awaiting him just feet ahead. He lingered just past the doorway, giving a low whistle before he struck out for the bed again. He fingered a small length of rope he palmed from his jeans pocket.

A New Sale to Entangled Publishing!

Now the contract has been signed (not that I'm superstitious, much!) I'm delighted to announce I'm now an Entangled Publishing author.

The book is for the Edge line and features the archangel Azrael and his unlikely heroine, Rowan. At the moment the book is called DESTINY RISING - I don't know if that title will stay or not.

It's been a long journey for this book, but I love this story and am thrilled it's found a home with Entangled :-)

Here's an unedited blurb for the book to give you an idea of what the story is about!

A hunter cursed by her tainted blood, an Archangel haunted by visions of death;
an impossible love that should never exist...

Destiny Rising

When dhampir Rowan Moreton falls for the hottest guy she's ever met, she's determined to protect him from the sordid reality of her life as a hunter of rogue vampires. Her dearest wish is to lead a normal life, but with enemies waiting in the shadows and destined to die young, love is something she can only dream of.

The Archangel Azrael, protector of the astral planes and slayer of dhampirs, is captivated by the enchanting Rowan--despite her fragile human heritage. One night is all he wants. Except one night is not enough. Her body tempts him, her eyes enslave--and the secrets she keeps intrigue him.

But when their past comes back to haunt them they discover a connection that challenges every belief they've ever held. And in order to survive they need to learn to trust their deadliest enemy. Each other.

4 Star Review for TAINTED from RT Book Reviews

I'm absolutely delighted with the 4 star review that RT Book Reviews gave Tainted.

"Phillips’ ability to spark utterly irresistible tension between her characters is showcased in full force in her fourth Forbidden novel. In this taut enemies-to-lovers story, the chemistry is blazing from the first scene and, as their secrets and hidden scars are slowly revealed, the depth of emotion that develops make this story a well-rounded success. Rife with historical detail and a pinch of ancient mysticism, this will surely delight Phillips’ fans and new readers in equal measure."

For fans of dark urban fantasy comes a novel that questions why forbidden fruit is always the most tempting...

Attending a vampire-themed masquerade party seems like a strange way to spend a night, but Nora is sick of frat parties and bars. Meeting Alec was just a bonus. Despite their immediate attraction, however, Alec is wary of involving himself with Nora, and when she pushes it, she discovers that Alec has secrets that could destroy them both. Is she willing to risk everything for a man she hardly knows? How far into darkness will he take her?

When Nora attempts to follow, however, things grow more complicated. Someone is hunting her - someone tied to a secret that goes back to the beginning of man. Soon, Nora finds herself drawn to two men, each with his own agenda. Can she save them both when one is destined to die?

EXCERPT

He sits in front of me and brings me to his chest. Our flesh is hot and sticky where it touches and I can’t stop the ache between my legs. His breathing is ragged and he tightens his grip on the back of my head as he tries to slow it. I am hurt or angry or frustrated, but I don’t know which. He runs his hands along my entire body and I push against him, needing him and not knowing how to accept his denial.
‘I want you, Nora. I have wanted you since I saw you. You are gorgeous. However, there are secrets that... Please understand, the steps that you want to take will reveal things. This cannot end well for either of us. I don’t want to make you suffer, but I am fated to suffer. Don’t make me bring you with me into the darkness. I can’t bear to lose you.’
I sense the pain that grips him. The darkness that he speaks of sounds frightening, but I don’t feel fear when I face him and meet his eyes. ‘I will follow you anywhere. Dark or light. Stop trying to make my choices for me.’
Our lips meet again, but it is with doubt. Neither of us knows what will happen if we are to move forward, but I want to have a chance to find out.
My body is still crying out for him but now my mind is calm. I want him, but I want him when he knows that I’m ready for whatever that means. His hands touch me and his caresses are soft. We both slow our breathing and I try to let my will match his. When he pulls away, he gathers the picnic and looks at me with longing and a hunger I do not recognize. It’s not sexual, but desperate. Almost as a dying man looks in the last moments of his life.
‘In three days,’ he says, ‘I will meet you again at the church where we first met. In the meantime, I want you to look something up — and if you do not appear at the church, I’ll know that what you found changed everything.’
‘Okay,’ I say warily. I’ll do anything he asks, but his fear scares me. What kind of secrets can he possibly hold? Little right now could stop me from going to him in three days.
‘Find the name Charles Samuels. He was an Oxford student in the 1960s. And then we shall see how much of the darkness you are willing to face.’
‘I’ll look him up, but Alec, I’m going to be at the church in three days,’ I say.
‘For your sake, Nora, I hope that you’re not.’
