Day Three ~ Amanda Ashby

Hello and welcome to day three of the Forbidden blog party!! Without further ado let me introduce my other CP, NAL and Puffin author Amanda Ashby, who writes about flesh chomping zombies and invisible killer fairies. Zombie Queen of Newbury High was listed by the New York Public Library's Stuff for the Teen Age 2010 as well as being nominated for the YALSA popular paperback 2011 ~ yay! And although I know she doesn't like to mention it, she is also David Boreanaz's Biggest Fan! Ha! It's out there now, Amanda!!!

Forbidden

First up I just want to make a very loud and a very undignified YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOO to celebrate the release of Christina’s debut book, Forbidden! As one of Christina’s cps, I have been lucky enough to read all of the books she has written over the last six years and I can honestly tell you that this one is her best yet. And yes, I might be just slightly biased, but she truly is one of the most amazing writers I’ve ever met, so it really does give me deep joy that the rest of the world is about to discover what I’ve long known. Christina Phillips rocks!!!!!

And now, you would think that with that sort of glowing, sparkly introduction, Christina would let me off from writing about some kind of forbidden love theme but no, apparently not. Not that I will hold it against her, since it’s her debut and really, it would be petty of me to grumble (but between you, me and the wall, I’m so going to make her re-write chapter twenty-six of her wip as payback!!).

So anyway, back to forbidden love. When it comes to the big FL, I’ve got three words for you. Buffy and Angel. Now anyone who knows me, knows that I’m team Angel and it doesn’t matter how many times I re-watch Buffy and warm to Blondie Bear, I just can’t see Buffy and Spike together. And the reason why? Because the connection between Buffy and Angel is just too strong. They should be together but they can’t.

Like they really, really can’t thanks to a pesky gypsy curse which means Angel will turn back into his evil alter-ego Angelus if he has one moment of pure happiness. Unfortunately, poor old Buffy only finds this out after she gives him one moment of pure happiness. Which, pretty much sucks for her and hence why their love is destined to be forbidden. Forever.

Which, when you think about it, is the whole problem with forbidden love. If you do it right, then the conflict is so strong that it can’t be overcome. So imagine my horror when Christina sent me the first chapter of Forbidden and I realized that, according to history, there was no way this story could possibly end well. Except the more I read, the more I wanted it to be okay and by chapter five, I didn’t even feel like I was critiquing a book, I felt like a desperate reader, urging an author to send me more pages because I quite literally could not bear the suspense of finding out what happened next.

Of course there is no way I’m going to tell you what does happen, so you will just have to go and read the story for yourself, but I can absolutely promise that you will be as enthralled by Christina’s world as I was and that you will be dying to read her next book, Captive, which hits the shelves in February 2011 (see what I did there? Clever, eh!)

Anyway, to celebrate the release of Forbidden, I’m putting a copy of my Young Adult novel, Zombie Queen of Newbury High up for grabs. It has absolutely nothing to do with forbidden love, druids or hot, hot, hot Roman dudes who don’t wear much clothing, but it does mention Buffy (quite a lot) so, you know, it’s almost the same thing!!!! Even better, to win a copy all you need to do is tell me what your favorite forbidden love is (oh, and if you mention Christina’s book, I will definitely give you extra marks!!!!!)

Hahah, thank you for that glowing recommendation, Amanda! (and let me just say, she wasn't joking about the whole chapter twenty-six thing either!)

So to be in the draw to win a copy of the fabulously fun Zombie Queen, what's your fave forbidden love?

It's just dawned on me that the Tiara Mafia - which is what the three of us CPs call ourselves all have our own obsessions. Me, musicals (and who wouldn't be obssessed with them); Amanda, Buffy (I'll reserve judgement on that one); and Christina, hot hot men (hmmm... could be useful if I ever need to blackmail her).

Is it any wonder we're such awesome friends and CPs!!!

Amanda Ashby said...

I think we can be more specific with Christina's talents - they're not about hot men, they're about finding photographs of hot men on the Internet, because I'm seriously in some DB heaven right now (and I just knew that Christina would do the bath tub photo for me because she is such a giver!!!!!!)

Btw, my word verification is ingraga which I think is some sort of Lady Gaga verb!!!!

Sara, my husband was very happy to see The Sound of Music highlighted here since I don't know how many times he's watched that movie. He also loves Brigadoon and Seven Wives for Seven Brothers which, incidentally, I can't stand because that eldest brother does not GROVEL at the end. Bah!!!

Christina Phillips said...

hahaha, Amanda, yes I couldn't pass up the opportunity of having David in the bathtub!!!

Er, that sounds so wrong... you know what I mean...

As for all this hot men talk, I don't know what you mean. After all, I have to research don't I, and you know how dedicated I am to my research?!

Amanda Ashby said...

Christina - oh, really, well how come I don't see you putting in the same care and attention into researching 9th century pottery vases as you do into looking for half-naked men who have six packs??????? Just saying.

Christina Phillips said...

Ummm... I don't understand the question...?

Vases????

Sara Hantz said...

I love Brigadoon too, even the non-musical black and white version.

Christina, your husband has very good taste!!!

Amanda, you're right, Christina does have the knack of finding the right pics!! And ditto on the Vase questione.

Amanda, I totally agree with you about Buffy being with Angel. I was very angry when they kicked Angel out of the relationship scene and replaced him with Spike.

I love the cover of your book Zombie Queen. The cover art fairie has been kind to both you and Christina's Forbidden cover. Christina's cover is sexy. All hail the Cover Art Fairie! I hope she doesn't start asking for sacrifices.

Forbidden Love...fave forbidden love. Gads, I am hopeless on having to choose a fave anything but I do remember going to a classic movie marathon and seeing Doctor Zhivago when I was about 14. I don't remember much about the story at all but I remember the emotions I experienced while watching it and there was lots of forbidden angst there!

Cathryn Brunet said...

I'm really beginning to feel like I missed out on something major with this Buffy thing. I've never seen an episode!

As for forbidden love... I cry in Moulin Rouge whenever I watch it and I adored Tristan and Isolde and of course, Romeo and Juliet.

Hmm. That's a worrying trend. Think I might have a thing about characters carking it.

Amanda Ashby said...

Becca - I know. It was just wrong, but because they set it up soooooo well I could never take to Spike the way I should've!!! And thank you about my Zombie cover! I agree that Christina and I have been very lucky!!!

Fiona - Oh, I vaguely remember watching that as well when I was younger. Angst and forbidden love is very exciting when you're a teenager!!!

Cathryn - I can't recommend Buffy enough. The character development and the dialogue are just insanely excellent (and yes, David Boreanaz is in it!!!!) Btw, I love the spelling of your name - that's my middle name but with the ine at the end!!!!

Christina Phillips said...

Becca, the cover to Zombie Queen is awesome - and the dress is exactly what Mia, the heroine, wears at one point!!!

I love my Forbidden cover too, so much that I cried when I opened the file. Good job I was home alone at the time!!!

Christina Phillips said...

Fiona, I've never seen Doctor Zhivago all the way through but I recall the angst!!

Cathryn, you're not alone. I've only seen a handful of Buffy episodes, including - happily enough - the invisible Buffy one which I think will stick in my mind for all eternity!!!

Gracie O'Neil said...

I'm sorry, Christina, but I'm still trying to cope with the trauma of hearing someone has never watched even one episode of Buffy.
However I have to say that the "David in the bathtub" shot is ministering to my shattered nerves even as we speak. Sound of Music, Brigadoon, YES! And Singing in the Rain, don't forget that one

Amanda Ashby said...

Gracie - I know. But then I sort of get jealous of Buffy virgins because they have so much awesomeness in front of them!!!!! Btw, are you watching Dollhouse???? I hate knowing that it's already been canceled, but I'm really enjoying it. Oh, and Gina Torres from Firefly and Angel was on Vampire Diaries last night - woot!!!

Robyn Grady said...

Amanda, you've so made me want to slip out my Buffy DVDs! I have to agree. Buffy and Angel *need* to be together. But Spike's naughtiness does turn my dials...

Oh I see Gerry's arrived! He's so affectionate!

Robbie xo

Christina Phillips said...

Gracie, I know, I just never seemed to catch the episodes and then they put them on at silly times so I gave up!!!

Singing in the Rain! Oh yes I do like that one!!

Michelle Styles said...

Right now my fave forbidden love is chocolate as I stepped on the Scales of Doom.

It is lovely to see Christina and your success, Amanda!
2004 RNA was far too long ago.

Christina Phillips said...

Robbie! We posted at the same time! And yes, that Spike is very bad. I won't mention *that* episode again...the other episode I watched all the way through was the musical one!!!

Rachel Bailey said...

Amanda, great post, but I have to say that my favourite forbidden love is Buffy and Spike. Angel had it all too easy with having a soul and being a good boy, and I mainly wanted to pat him on the head and give him a lolly, the poor dear.

But Spike? =)

Spike had a really difficult time (the whole not having a soul thing) and yet he still became a hero by the end (ignoring season 6, naturally). I did not want to pat him on the head. ;)

Even when he was fighting (like that episode in series 7 with the principal in the shed - my goodness), he was glorious. Personally, I think Buffy needed someone who was a little bit naughty.

Sorry, I feel like I've violated the friendship a little, but you did ask. ;)

Amanda Ashby said...

Robbie - yes, Spike is a very naughty boy and I do like him, just not as much as Angel!!!!!!! Though I've been a long time Gerry fan (strangely enough, just about the time 300 came out!!!!!!)

Christina - Once More With Feeling is about the only musical that I really love!!!!! It's brilliant!!!

Amanda Ashby said...

Rachel - I don't mind at all and I agree that Spike is awesome BUT the problem is that the Buffy/Angel thing was so well set up that no matter how much I like Spike, I just believe that Angel and Buffy are meant to be together. Plus (and I know this makes me sound shallow) but I do have my concerns over Spike's chin!!!!!!! Phew, friendship intact!!! Btw, are you watching The Vampire Diaries - that's totally become my new fav vampire show!!!

Christina Phillips said...

Rachel, I'm choking with laughter at the thought of anyone trying to pat Spike on the head *snorts*

As for the musical episode, Amanda, that was the only episode my husband ever watched, and not in a good way! He didn't get it at ALL!!!

And OMG, Spike's chin? Hahahah! I will now have to track down a pic and scrutinize!!!!

Rachel Bailey said...

Amanda, I loved the first season of The Vampire Diaries, but got bored and wandered away during the second season. What season are you up to in NZ?

Spike's chin? You serious? I think he has a lovely chin!

Christina Phillips said...

I've never looked at Spike's chin before, but am going to see if I can hunt down a close-up!!!

Anita Joy said...

Okay, having just read all these comments I really am going to have to see Buffy (Cathryn like you I've never seen one episode).

As for Forbidden love, it can only be so forbidden, because unless it hits that HEA you've lost me (except in something like a TV series, because you never seem to get the end).

So I'm more of a Cinderella type forbidden love gal - you know, lvoe conquers all - even if it is a scullery maid and a prince :)

Christina Phillips said...

Anita, I completely agree, I have to have my HEA otherwise I am not a happy girl at all!!!

Lisa R/alterlisa said...

Christina's cover is hot & sexy.

Fav forbidden love--- any movie that has Sam Elliott, OMG I love that sexy cowboy.

Hi Amanda - I too love the Angel and Buffy love story. Season 2&3 are my favourites. In season 1 of Angel they had Angel becoming mortal and him changing time so that no-one but him remembers he and Buffy getting together. So sad.

I agree they did it so well that Spike was Spike - I loved him when he was bad and with Druisilla - fantastic lines. His story arc though is fascinating.

And my goodness Cathryn and Anita - get thee to see Buffy. It is a slow stater with season 1 (which is more monster of the week type) but really the whole series is fascinating.
